$52.2 billion, up 3% since 1994, was budgeted in 1995 for training
by U.S. organizations. Of this amount, 72%, or $37.6 billion, was for training
staff salaries.
49.6 million individuals will receive some formal training from their employers in 1995, up 5% since 1994.
$10.3 billion was budgeted in 1995 for outside expenditures such as seminars, computers, and packaged training programs, up 4% since 1994. This includes $3.4 billion for off-the-shelf and custom training materials.
Regarding program types:
- 70% of all organizations provide Team-Building training
- 57% provide training in Managing Change.
- 27% report using multimedia as an instructional method.
- "Use of ....self-assessment/self-testing instruments moved up in
the rankings."
Of organizations surveyed with over 10,000 employees:
59% are involved in reengineering
56% are involved in downsizing
59% are involved in transitions to team-based structures
Of organizations surveyed of all sizes:
35% are involved in reengineering
31% are involved in downsizing
40% are involved in transitions to team-based structures
"Corporate downsizing remains ubiquitous, and slimmed-down organizations require more training. With fewer workers to do the work, almost certainly those fewer workers are going to need to learn to do additional tasks or to work more effectively or both."
"But in many cases the training department itself has been downsized and placed under the same edict -- find ways to do as much, or more, with less in the way of staff and resources."
"Episodic learning will give way to continuous accessibility of learning through learning networks, performance support tools, and electronic job aids - self initiated, just-in-time information."
"CD-ROM technology in particular will enhance the way in which training is delivered while reducing costs. While it's our belief that technology should not replace the trainer, technology does dramatically reduce the costs of implementation."
"The effective use of technology will be the most dramatic change we see in delivery in the next five years. Lastly, technology will help organizations train critical masses of employees in short periods of time."
"Organizations want better training in less time. CD-ROM, self-study, video teleconferencing, etc., can develop knowledge and basic interaction skills."
