In 1973, Dave was identified as one of the most severely abused children in the state of California. Having survived a childhood of despair, Dave vowed not to become a product of his negative environment, by refusing to use his unfortunate experiences as a crutch. Even when professionals predicted he would either end up dead or in prison before his 18th birthday, Dave remained steadfast to his inner convictions. Just over 20 years later, with the same tenacious focus he acquired as a child, Dave retired from an illustrious career in the U.S. Air Force, was honored as one of the country's Ten Outstanding Young Americans, became a Pulitzer-Prize author and proudly carried the coveted ceremonial flame for the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay.
Because of his past, coupled with his professional background as a former Juvenile Hall counselor and Youth Service worker, Dave is uniquely qualified to understand the challenges facing America's youth and adults who seem unfulfilled and bogged down. Often dubbed the "Robin Williams with glasses," Dave relates to his audience at their level. To date, hundreds of thousands of teenagers, hundreds of Social Service agencies, school administrators, and several major corporations have been spellbound and identify with Dave's "real life" information and captivating sense of humor. Interweaving a careful balance of seriousness and quick-wit satire in story-telling form, Dave stresses the importance of dealing with deep personal issues, faith in the unconquerable human spirit and the joy of living a full, rich life. Throughout Dave's presentations his message of overcoming obstacles and personal responsibility is evident and makes an unforgettable impact.
